Azure Cost Management APIsCost Management

As of my last update, the primary Azure Cost Management API is the "Consumption API," which allows you to retrieve Azure consumption data. Features of the Consumption API include:

  1. Usage Details:

    • Explanation: Provides detailed information about the resources consumed in an Azure subscription, including usage quantity, meter details, and additional metadata.
    • Use Case: Useful for granular analysis of resource consumption, allowing you to understand which resources are driving costs.
  2. Marketplace Charges:

    • Explanation: Retrieves details about charges incurred due to the usage of Azure Marketplace resources.
    • Use Case: Useful for understanding and analyzing charges related to third-party services and applications from the Azure Marketplace.
  3. Price Sheet:

    • Explanation: Allows you to retrieve the Azure price sheet, which provides the pricing details for various Azure resources.
    • Use Case: Useful for calculating estimated costs based on current pricing for different Azure resources.
  4. Budgets:

    • Explanation: Enables the management of budgets for Azure subscriptions. Budgets help track and control costs by setting thresholds and alerts.
    • Use Case: Useful for proactively managing and controlling costs by setting budget limits and receiving notifications when spending approaches or exceeds those limits.
  5. Reservations:

    • Explanation: Provides details about Azure Reserved VM Instances (RIs), allowing you to track and manage reserved capacity.
    • Use Case: Useful for optimizing costs by taking advantage of reserved capacity for virtual machines.

Now, let's provide a simplified example of how you might use the Consumption API to retrieve usage details using a hypothetical scenario. Please note that this is a basic example, and actual implementations may vary based on your specific requirements and programming language.

Example in Python using Azure SDK for Python (azure-mgmt-consumption):

from azure.identity import DefaultAzureCredential
from azure.mgmt.consumption import ConsumptionManagementClient

# Specify your Azure subscription ID and other details
subscription_id = 'your_subscription_id'
resource_group = 'your_resource_group'
billing_period_start = '2023-01-01'
billing_period_end = '2023-01-31'

# Authenticate using DefaultAzureCredential
credential = DefaultAzureCredential()
consumption_client = ConsumptionManagementClient(credential, subscription_id)

# Get usage details for the specified billing period
usage_details = consumption_client.usage_details.list(
resource_group,
start_date=billing_period_start,
end_date=billing_period_end
)

# Print usage details
for usage_detail in usage_details:
print(f"Resource ID: {usage_detail.id}")
print(f"Usage Quantity: {usage_detail.quantity}")
print(f"Meter ID: {usage_detail.meter_id}")
print(f"Meter Details: {usage_detail.meter_details}")
print("----------------------------")

This example assumes you have the necessary Azure SDK installed (azure-mgmt-consumption), and you've set up the authentication using Azure Identity. Adjust the parameters, such as subscription_id, resource_group, billing_period_start, and billing_period_end, according to your specific scenario.
